Stadium Spotlight: Great American Ball Park

Baseball fans looking to explore a stadium with deep historical ties, scenic views, and a welcoming atmosphere need to add Great American Ball Park to their list. Located in the heart of downtown Cincinnati along the Ohio River, this ballpark is home to the Cincinnati Reds, Major League Baseball's oldest professional team. Whether you're a die-hard Reds fan (like me!) or just love experiencing different stadiums, Great American Ball Park offers an unforgettable game-day experience.

A Brief History

Great American Ball Park opened its gates on March 31, 2003, replacing Riverfront Stadium (also known as Cinergy Field), which had served as the Reds' home since 1970. Named after the Great American Insurance Group, the park was designed to blend modern amenities with nods to the Reds' rich history. The stadium's architecture pays homage to Cincinnati’s baseball past while providing a comfortable, fan-friendly environment. In the days of selling naming rights for stadiums, I think Great American Ball Park is probably the best company-named stadium in the country.

Getting There

One of the best things about visiting Great American Ball Park is its prime location in downtown Cincinnati. It is easily accessible by car or on foot if you're staying nearby. If you're driving, multiple parking garages and lots are available within walking distance, including those at The Banks, which is a vibrant area full of restaurants and entertainment options. I often stay across the river in Kentucky and drive over. It's a quick drive and parking is easy.

Game-Day Experience

Best Seats in the House

Great American Ball Park offers a variety of seating options, each providing a unique experience. If you want the best view of the game and the Cincinnati skyline, the Scout Box seats behind home plate are a great option. The Dugout Box seats along the first and third base lines put you close to the action, perfect for those who want to see the players up close.

For a premium experience, the Diamond Club provides cushioned seating, in-seat service, and access to an all-inclusive club lounge with gourmet food and drinks. If you're looking for a budget-friendly experience, the View Level offers excellent sightlines at a lower cost. The Sun/Moon Deck in right field is another fun choice, especially for catching home run balls and soaking up the game’s energy with fellow fans.

Food and Drinks

A trip to Great American Ball Park isn’t complete without sampling some of the fantastic food options available. One of the most iconic local favorites is Skyline Chili, which offers the famous Cincinnati-style chili served over spaghetti or hot dogs. Montgomery Inn’s barbecue is another must-try, featuring their legendary pulled pork and ribs.

For those craving something unique, the Fry Box serves up delicious loaded fries, while Mr. Red’s Smokehouse offers smoked meats and classic ballpark fare.

Must-See Attractions

Reds Hall of Fame and Museum

No visit to Great American Ball Park is complete without stopping by the Reds Hall of Fame and Museum. Located right outside the stadium, this museum celebrates the team’s legendary history with interactive exhibits, memorabilia, and tributes to the greatest Reds players of all time. Fans can relive the Big Red Machine era, see World Series trophies, and even step inside a replica broadcast booth. This is an incredible museum and worth a stop for all baseball fans.

The Riverboat Deck

One of the most unique features of Great American Ball Park is the Riverboat Deck in center field. This nod to Cincinnati’s history as a river town is a great spot to take photos and soak in the scenic views of the Ohio River. It also serves as a party deck available for group outings.

The Fan Zone

Families and younger fans will enjoy the Fan Zone, which features interactive games, batting cages, and a playground. This area is perfect for kids to burn off some energy while parents take a break and enjoy the game from a relaxed environment.

The Atmosphere and Traditions

Gapper, Mr. Redlegs, and the Mascots

One of the fun aspects of attending a Reds game is seeing the team’s beloved mascots. Gapper, Mr. Redlegs, Rosie Red, and Mr. Red bring energy to the stadium, interacting with fans, posing for pictures, and participating in on-field entertainment.

Fireworks Fridays and Theme Nights

Great American Ball Park hosts various themed events throughout the season, including Fireworks Fridays, where post-game fireworks light up the Cincinnati skyline. We saw a spectacular drone show over the 4th of July last year. The fireworks are top notch!

Why You Should Visit Great American Ball Park

Great American Ball Park is a must-visit for any baseball fan, offering a perfect blend of history, modern amenities, and stunning views. Whether you’re coming for the food, the atmosphere, or the chance to see the Reds play in their historic home, a trip to this ballpark is a fantastic experience.

With its picturesque setting along the Ohio River, easy accessibility, and passionate fanbase, Great American Ball Park delivers one of the most enjoyable game-day experiences in Major League Baseball.
